We at Mint Builders thrive on imaginary, exciting ideas for home renovations and extensions, so we took due note of the up and coming 2020 ‘Don’t Move, Improve’ event, which is always bursting with good ideas and a great deal of home improvement and extension innovation.
Entries are now open until October 17 via newlondonarchitecture.org and those set to enter have to submit project information, photos and drawings ASAP. The winners will be announced in February 2020.
As some may know, ‘Don’t Move – Improve’ is very much in many ways mainly a London event and, of course London, when it comes to extensions and renovations has its challenges — particularly, for homeowners, where the eternal conundrum is all about making the most of limited space available in which to accommodate ever-changing lifestyles and circumstances.
Homes and Property Magazine report that with the upheaval and expense of moving, more Londoners than ever are improving and refurbishing their homes instead. Home improvements can be done exceptionally well — and exceptionally badly — and, of course, for sure can be one of the most inspiring things any homeowner can do.
With imagination, most likely a talented architect who understands you and your needs, even the smallest refurbishment or extension can become a sensational space, with the ability to transform a family life and give daily pleasure in so many ways …say the Homes and Property Magazine experts.
Ten years ago New London Architecture launched the annual Don’t Move, Improve! competition to showcase the diversity and character of homes being redesigned in London. Don’t Move, Improve! has captured imaginations and inspired countless architectural projects.
Now, once again Homes and Property are seeking architects and homeowners to showcase the projects that make them proud. Don’t Move, Improve! covers a wide range of home improvement projects that demonstrate how well-designed homes can certainly improve quality of life and create functional space solutions on the smallest of sites, while also celebrating the personalities of the clients and designers.
Shortlisted and winning entries will feature in Homes & Property Magazine, and this year there are special prizes to highlight emerging trends and key challenges. The Urban Oasis of the Year prize will recognise innovative urban gardens, whether a courtyard, a rooftop or beautiful balcony. The Compact Design of the Year and Best Project under £75,000 prizes recognise that good design can come in small packages, and needn’t break the bank. Now that is as good in Cheltenham and The Cotswolds as in London, for sure.
Adds the magazine, “We all have a duty to design and build responsibly, and the Environmental Leadership Prize will go to the project that demonstrates thought leadership for environmental considerations such as long-life design, sustainable materials and energy efficiency.”
Neil Dusheiko Architects was shortlisted this year for the radical remodelling of a Victorian terrace house in Hackney. Neil Dusheiko comments: “Don’t Move, Improve! shows why London is one of the leading cities for great design. It is an opportunity to showcase new work and share emerging trends, and for architects it is a fantastic way to promote their studio to potential new clients for years to come.
We know that homeowners enjoy sharing the results that have transformed their homes. Like them we’ve all been inspired by Don’t Move, Improve. We would like to see as many entries as possible to celebrate our great city’s amazing everyday architecture.”
Quite right – and, of course, we at Mint are sure once again, we will certainly be stimulated and inspired by the projects that emerge from this always eye-catching Awards Event. We in our team learn so much from seeing such projects. They give us ideas galore that we can suggest to our clients here in Cheltenham and the Cotswolds and that is a most rewarding thing to be able to do. You can’t, after all, collect too many good ideas – now can you.
