Government ‘Green’ Homes grant funding has now been cut…warns HomeOwners Alliance

You will recall recently on this blog we highlighted a special ‘Green Home’ Awards, being staged by the Homebuilding and Renovating Magazine. More and more these days, when considering home renovation and extension, many home owners – we at Mint very much appreciate – are most interested in achieving aspects of sustainability within their home extension or renovation project plans, as and when is possible.

But this week there was news, reported by the always-informed HomeOwners Alliance, that the Government has drastically cut funding for the Green Homes Grant for 2021 and are looking to axe it less than a year after it was announced!

end of March

The update is, reports the HOA, that home-owners should apply for vouchers before the end of March if they want to take advantage of the savings on offer. HOA further add that it was in July, that the Chancellor announced that home-owners will be able to claim vouchers of up to £5,000 for energy-saving home improvements, with the poorest getting up to £10,000.

vouchers scheme

This was part of a £1.5 billion ‘Green Homes’ Grant scheme announced for England, eligible for home-owners. It was a vouchers scheme to pay for environmentally friendly improvements. The scheme was due to end on 31st March 2021, but apparently after calls from consumers struggling to book installers, the Government have extended the scheme to 31st March 2022.

drastic reduction

Now, reports the HOA, the Government has since made a u-turn by drastically reducing the funding available with no commitment to run the scheme beyond the end of March 2021. They have suggested that there was a lack of consumer demand.

committed

The HOA are not impressed, and nor are we at Mint, as we are very much committed to the value of sustainability in residential homes and we are quite often approached by clients to suggest ideas and ways their project can achieve better energy sustainability.

teething problems

Says the HOA in their report, “There has been an incredible amount of interest in the scheme, as we know from the many comments we have received. But there are teething problems with administrative delays in issuing of the vouchers and a lack of registered installers. These difficulties are not insurmountable and could be expected with any major launch, but this should not be an excuse to withdraw the funding!

act now

They add that if you, as a homeowner are hoping to be able to access your £5,000 voucher and spend it on the home improvements of your choice, you may need to act before the end of March – and be prepared to deal with the paperwork that is involved.

March applications only?

The Government has now only committed £320m to the scheme for 2021-22, a sliver of the original announcement made in July and there have been suggestions that the funding will only cover applications made before the end of March. So not good news …and its a shame!

voucher provision

The HOA report that the scheme involves the Government providing a voucher that covers two-thirds of the cost of qualifying works at an applicant’s home. The maximum value of the voucher is £5,000.

low income

Adds the HOA, “If you are on a low income and receive certain benefits, you can receive a voucher covering ALL of the cost of the improvements, up to £10,000. A full list of qualifying benefits are available here on the Simple Energy Advice website. Note that the installer will request and receive payment from the Government for the costs covered by the voucher.
